Because of pressure of time, all persons like to schedule the activities in such a way that all activities are started on time, and completed as per the time that he/she has decided for those activities. The starting of activities has to be done at a particular time for it to be complete by a particular time. A busy person is likely to forget and hence the need for alarms.
Mechanical Alarm Clocks
The mechanical alarm clocks operated on the position of clock hands. When the clocks hands came to a position, cloak would start the alarm by going down on a step on the cam. Since the clocks operated on the 12-hour basis, an alarm clock had to be reset during that 12-hour period and planning had to be done on 12-hour basis. 24-hour alarm clocks were also developed in the past, but they never became popular. The alarms at a particular time of week or a month were just out of question.
Manual Alarms
24-Hour operating telephone companies later took on the work of monitoring of individual alarm requirements of persons. A person can request a telephone company operator for waking him/her up at a particular time of the day and the operator would ring up the subscriber at the appointed time. When the telephones became automatic, the alarm systems were also automated and were made more reliable. These are the alarm clocks in absentia.
Modern Day Alarm clocks
With advent of transistors, there was a complete change of system of clocks and alarm clocks. The watches went beyond being just indicators of time of the day to indicators of time, day, date and month of year. The watches were integrated with everything electronic and the automated systems were made capable of staring on time and without human intervention. The spring-operated alarm clock soon became obsolete and went out of production. Accurate clocks came in regular use, and they were integrated with the other system systems like radio and stereo CD deck. The automated systems came into regular use. A person could set a time to start a radio or a stereo CD deck on a particular time and get a musical alarm and at the same time, his coffee machine could be made to start hissing and give him the flavor of his /her favorite brew.
Modern Alarm Systems
Modern alarm systems do much more than give an alarm by a particular time of the day. These alarms can be set much in advance, an alarm system for the entire year can be set up on January 1 of the year, and it will take over all tasks for the entire year. It will not just remind you of a particular event, but would also tell you what to do on that day of the year, send your greeting to the particular person, and wish him for his birthday or marriage anniversary. A person for forgetting his marriage anniversary, and being punished for it, is a thing of past. These modern systems not only help you in by taking away drudgery of work, but also take away part of your work and responsibilities. The work of keeping you in informed is a major task and automated system of alarms do the work for you.
