Balcony-Railing Pots

Spring passed away and then summer is here and the flowers are in bloom; a fact those with allergies are probably already aware of.

For those of us more inclined towards our budding buddies, spring is a great time to grow a garden and cultivate everything from azaleas to tomatoes.

Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed with a front yard which is why these edge pots are so great.

Apartment living comes with restrictions and the ability to have a garden is among of the worst of these.

Many choose to dot their balconies with flower pots instead of just keeping the area barren. Those pots end up looking rather tacky and can actual create a fire hazard.

The edge pots created by Michael Hilgers is a great compromise to the problem. A modern take on those traditional window boxes, these edge pots can be used to grow anything under the sun. The pots are split in half which straddles the railing and have two compartments.

These two compartments can both be used, however, you will need to make sure balance is attained or you just might loose your pot. Coming in different colors like lime and mandarin, they add a great splash of color.

If you want to get really creative, you can match opposite color flowers to the pots so crack out that color wheel.

Restaurants, clubs, bistros, and even your office may want to look into using the "Edge Pots" to spruce up their facades. Easy to take care and very stylish, they will be a great addition to your apartment or place of business.

How can you purchase the rail flower pots?

Hi Samuel

I really thank you for your enewsletter updating.
I saw and fasinated by the edge pot created by Michael. I wonder how it (the edge pot) is going to respond to the different types (shape, size, style) of railings found. I was thinking of an adjustable connection between the two parts and a drip hole for excess water somewhere.

Great idea, but am also concerned about the water dripping, the balance so it will not fall and will it fit different railing width.

I live in White Rock, BC…is it available in Home Depot, Canadian Tire Stores?

Thanks.

Hi Samuel

I enjoy each issue. Can it fit a metal rail, i am in jamaica. how do you accomplish the balance on both sides because if you use same amount of potting soil for both sides the rate of growth of what is plant on each side may vary hence create an inbalance, unless there will only be one plant per pot. really great idea for apartment buildings and in carribean, much sun.

Great idea but aside from water dripping, balance and how it can fit different railings discussed above, wonder how strong it can stand against strong winds and rain?
