If you’re the home that hosts most of the parties among your friends, you already know that entertaining has changed a bit since you first bought your home. Instead of people going out for a night on the town, more are content to sit at home, sipping wine and listening to music.
To help make your home the perfect place for entertaining and relaxing, you should think about these latest home design trends.
Adding sunrooms to your home seems to be a popular idea these days. They allow you to have more room in which to have guests sit, while also creating a room that can be used in a number of seasons. To this room, you might want to add a hot tub or an entertainment center that will help to keep your friends occupied as you make food or serve drinks.
Try putting in a bar if you and your friends like to sip a few cocktails or beers when you are together.
This doesn’t have to be a complicated affair, just a small arrangement of stools and a high table will work just find – as long as the alcohol is nearby along with glasses and ice.

Upholstery Cleaning, get That Smell out!!
If you’ve walked into your home lately and been greeted by something other than your spouse, you might want to think about doing a deeper clean.
When smells begin to arise in your home, it’s often a sign that you have dirt or bacteria build up in your furniture pieces and in your rugs, causing an odor.
For your health and the healthy of everyone else in your home, it’s time to get rid of the stink.
You might want to start by doing a basic cleaning – wiping down surfaces, vacuuming, etc.
This will give you an idea of whether or not the smell is a superficial occurrence or if you need to clean deeper in order to get rid of it. If this cleaning doesn’t help, try upholstery cleaning next to see if maybe the smell is in your couch or chairs.
At the same time, you might also want to have your carpets cleaned.
If none of these tips help, it might be time to have your water pipes and heating and cooling ducts checked.
There may be something in these systems causing the stink, no matter what you do in response.
While there are fabric refreshers and air deodorizers, it’s always best to find the root of the problem, instead of just covering it up.

While they mean well, you probably want some time alone to make a decision on an expensive piece of furniture – without the influence of the sales team. But it can seem like it’s impossible to shake these people off in favor of browsing on your own.
Here are some tips to make it possible.
- Without ducking behind the microfiber sofas, you need a plan to escape the sales team.
- You can start by being very clear about your intentions right as you walk in the door.
- Let them know that you’re simply looking around and that if you are bothered, you will not be buying from the store.
- While this sounds a little harsh, it will guarantee that you get some privacy.
- Another tactic is that you can use is to simply ignore the sales person when they come to talk to you.
Just go about your business, but don’t look at them or say anything to them. This will generally let them in on the fact that you’re not going to talk to them unless you absolutely have to.

When you’re building a home, you don’t have to give up your commitment to the environment.
All you need to do is realize that you have other options in building materials than those that require cutting down new trees and using dangerous chemicals. In fact, you can also create a home with materials that are recyclable so that you can remove pieces without worrying about them sitting in a landfill forever.
Creating an earth friendly home is as easy as finding an environmentally friendly builder who shares your ideas. Lucky enough, these builders are easy to find in today’s eco-friendly world.
But even if they are not, you simply need to find building materials that have been recycled or are being reused from other building products. This will allow you to create a home that is not impacting the world’s resources.

Within vinyl shutters, for example, you can create a lovely finish for your home while still being able to minimize your impact on the world.
Other possible ways to make your home more environmentally friendly is by using woods from homes that have been torn down or from the scraps of other building projects.

Is This Zen Enough for You?

Simplifying your life is the latest catchphrase to hit the decorating market. But what does that mean? I tried to figure out how to make my place more Zen, but it ended up being a stressful experience in the process. When you’re getting rid of stuff that you know and that you love, that’s never easy.
I tried to start by getting rid of everything that I didn’t love and that I didn’t use anymore. But I had a hard time deciding what I could part with. I loved that big plastic chair in the living room, but since it really wasn’t an ‘element’ like the Zen books told me, out it went. I added fountains, chimes, and everything else that was supposed to calm down the energy of my life.
I also got rid of my bright orange couch because it wasn’t as soothing to the soul. And I also got rid of my plastic blinds, replacing them with bamboo shades.
After all of the changes I made, I found myself liking the living room a lot more. It was calm, it was…well…Zen. And while I may not be meditating in there any time soon, I would certainly give it a second thought now.

There are a number of very practical pieces available that can have multiple uses. For instance a small storage table can be used to keep your candles and cocktail napkins handy, provide additional seating or the ideal spot to rest your tired feet after a long day.
Another element to think about is shade. You can opt for a permanent structure such as a cabana or buy a large sun umbrella to protect your deck so you can still enjoy those hot summer afternoons comfortably without turning into a piece of burnt toast.
On your ‘must do’ accessorizing list is to deck out the space with plenty of pots and plants to further cement the link between indoor styling and the outdoors. It needs not cost a lot of money yet will provide visual and scented interest to your space, bringing the whole scheme together.
