Although technology has come a long way in making vinyl look like wood, they still do not quite measure up to the look of real wood. This is the reason that many homeowners turn to real wood shutters for their home.
Wood shutters can be stained or painted, depending upon your needs. If you have a more rustic and natural home, then stained shutters may help to enhance that look and feel more than a painted shutter.

It is essential that wood shutters have a sealant on them to help them to withstand the effects of the weather, but there are many different treatments that are available in your local home improvement store that will give your shutters the extra protection that they need.

If you are using the wood shutters inside your home, then you can leave them natural, stain them, or paint them. Shutters make a great addition to the windows inside of your home, simply because they offer great light and privacy control.
They are easy to install and easy to open and close, which is what draws many homeowners into using them for their home.
Wood shutters, such as those offered by Hunter Douglas, are a wonderful way to add value and beauty to your home. Whether you choose shutters for the inside or outside of your home, they will make your home feel more welcoming and full of life.

Smart Flooring, Childproofing Your Home is Easy
When you’re expecting a new child, you want to make sure you’re bringing them into the safest world possible. And that means baby proofing your home. Soften those rough corners and make sure that outlets are covered, sure you know that, but what else can you be doing to help your new son or daughter stay out of harm’s way?
You need to actually think about keeping yourself and your partner safe when you are walking around the house so that you’re not getting hurt and then potentially leaving your baby in a dangerous position.
To help yourself stay safe, you need to think about things like flooring, how slippery it is and whether it is safe for you to walk on.
Some people prefer hardwood floors while others prefer carpeted – that choice is up to you. Also think about keeping things within reach so that you don’t reach up and lose your balance in the kitchen or other rooms.
Child proofing needs to be about mommy too!

Creating a Focal Point of Style upon a Staircase

When buying a home, it’s easy to become fixated on the features – the number of bedrooms, the location, etc.
But when you walk into a home, you don’t see these things, you only see the decorations and the way the home is arranged. In order to create great style, you might want to choose a home that has a focal point that will make everything stop to notice.
One of the more dramatic home additions is a spiral staircase, though they are also quite rare. This can come down in the middle of the home and become the first thing guests see when they walk in the door.
Another common focal point is a fireplace addition. These not only provide warmth, but they will also help to create a sitting area where guests can gather. Even if you don’t have a chimney, you can add in an electric fireplace to give the same effect.
Choose one part of your home that you want to people to see and then decide if the home has a special piece that makes people want to stop and admire your home and your taste. That’s the definition of style, isn’t it?

As the colder winds of winter begin to blow, it’s only natural that you begin to wonder if your home is ready for these cooler days.

To best prepare your home, you need to begin to think about removing the traces of summer fun and start readying your home to keep in warmer air. Here are the ways you can winterize your home in one day:
- First of all, you will want to remove any patio furniture or other outside structures that were designed for the warmer months.
- As it snows, this furniture can become damaged, so you want to move it indoors if you can in order to preserve it. And regardless, since you’re not using it anyway, it’s not going to be missed.
- You will also want to have someone come out to check your heating system before the first snow. This will prevent any surprise problems in the dead of winter when everyone is calling for repairs too.
- Also, be sure to have your pipes looked at to be sure they are properly insulated. When they are not, they can be prone to cracking and exploding, leading you to more problems than you really need.
When It Rains on Your Parade

Nobody likes it when Mother Nature just isn’t cooperating. You have this great idea to throw a party on your deck and the storm clouds start rolling up, threatening to soak everyone while they sit and relax.
While you could start planning your parties according to the daily weather forecast, that’s simply no way to live. The ideal situation would be to have a bigger house, of course, but that tends to be a little bit expensive, don’t you think?
You need to be a little more flexible with your party’s location when rain is a possibility. Try opening the door between your home and the deck to let people stay inside or outside, depending on their preference or look into retractable awnings to give you some extra cover.

Another great way to keep every dry and happy is to clear out your garage and make your party space there – with the garage door open, of course.
Or celebrate the rain by giving your entire party clear rain ponchos to stay out in the storm without getting wet. That would certainly be a party that no one would forget.
A flexible party host is the one that always throws the greatest parties, even if the weather doesn’t RSVP as it should.
