The desert is the appropriate place for cactus wren

Home

The cactus wren, it’s the Arizona state bird. It is larger than the others wrens of North America. It has spots in the outer tail, a white stripe over the eye and dark spots. All this distinguishes it from the others. In its throat has black feathers that look eyesbrows. It has long beak and long legs. About 21 cm is its long. Cactus wren collects food on the ground. Beetles, wasps, ants, other insects and fruits are its food. They use to eat sometimes small frogs too. For living in the desert they get the most of water they need to outlive in the desert from all what they eat.

It is very animated and energic. It uses many different sounds in its vocabulary. Cactus wren likes to explore all what is new where it lives. It could be found in a garden, garage looking and seeing what is going on in. If a window is down anywhere they like to investigate what happens inside. They like as well harried, disturb a cat, a dog any pet who comes into its territory.

Cactus wrens normally live in areas with a big amount of cacti. The cactus Cholla is which they like more. On the condensed parts of these cacti, they hold their nets. From February to March they mate. They can have more than 3 broods every season. The males help in the wonderful fact of building the net. It is made of straw, grass and feathers. With a football design and a with a side entrance they protect their nets from many predators.

One important fact is that they build two nets, one used for the roosting and the other one for the young. This is a very curious behaviour. In one net the female incubates the next batch of eggs and in the other the male takes care of the young.

In 1931 cactus wrens (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus) were named the Arizona bird. This means curved beak. They will try always to come back to their favourite places and nest there year after year. Their favourite spots to nest are cacti, specially saguaro cactus and cholla cactus. They can be seen in farms where they could build perfectly their nets. These are the more remarkable cactus wren facts.
