Christmas wreaths. A tradition from the ancient Rome

Home

Christmas wreaths began to exist like Christmas trees. In the same way they were created. It symbolizes for some, the strength of life conquering the forces of winter. In the ancient Rome, decorative wreaths were used for people as a sign of victory. Nowadays it is thought that this custom brought the hanging of wreaths to our times. Many wreaths have been made since then and we used to hang them on doors during Christmas holiday. In many houses all around the world are found nice and decorative Christmas wreaths.

Is interesting also, to know the history of the Advent wreaths. The pre-Christian Germanic people lighted fires and gathered wreaths of evergreen as signs of hope for the coming spring and renewed light. This tradition was kept alive for the Christians. Protestants and Catholics used these symbols for celebrating their Advent hope in Christ by the 16th century. Throughout Germany the use of wreaths got to other parts of the Christian world.

Christmas wreath is made traditionally of 4 candles in a circle. It is made of evergreen and with a 5th candle in the middle. Candles are as follow: Four violet candles, three violet candles and one rose, or four white candles in the middle is also used. The candles are lighted each day at home. The first week a candle, then another and doing this until 25th December, when the last candle, the middle candle will be light. The light of this candle takes place on Christmas Eve and it represents the birth of Jesus Christ.

Each wreath has a different purpose. At Christmas we’ll decorate our homes with a evergreen Christmas wreath. It will give a special nice touch and wonderful felling to our houses. The leaves of Christmas wreaths symbolize again, life during and throughout the tough winter.
