Corner Armoires

Corner armoires offer a lavish ornamental look to your home. In this article we are describing what they are, their various uses, and the styles, designs, and colors they are available in.

An armoire is a large, tall, standalone, cupboard, or a wardrobe, often lavishly ornamental. A cabinet usually has drawers, shelves, and is fitted with doors. It is used for storing a variety of things, including household items. It is a piece of furniture that is quite versatile, and can be placed in any room of your house, as an item of decoration, or as a main storage unit.

Corner armoires came into use to fill up the corners of the rooms, which generally are the most difficult spaces in rooms to fill up.

Initially, armoires were cabinets, or cupboards, which were specifically used to store guns and ammunition. Later, they were used to store clothes and other household apparel in homes that did not have built-in wardrobes, or closets.

Today, you can use such armoires not only to decorate the corners of your rooms, but also to store various pieces of decoration, china, electronics equipment, and even your computer. There are endless possibilities of what you can do with this piece of furniture.

Creating Storage Spaces

Corner armoires, which were once made with wood that was beautifully finished, are now made with a variety of ‘high tech’ materials.

Fitted with shelves, drawers, and poles for hanging suits, gowns, dresses, and coats, the versatility of these armoires makes them the most useful piece of furniture throughout your house.

  • In your family or living room, you can use such armoires to keep your television, a CD/DVD player, and other electronic equipment, such as a stereo, disk changers, and your video games. These armoires in the corner of your living room can also be used to store your music equipment, along with the sheets or the book of music, your scrapbooks, family photo albums, and similar collections.
  • In your bedroom, armoires can be used to store a variety of clothes, including sweaters, shirts, lingerie, as well as linen and other items of bedding. Jewelry, purses, scarves, you name it, a variety of personal items can fit into your armoires in the corner of your bedroom. If you are a person who watches television from the comforts of your bed, such an armoire is one of the best places to install one.
  • These armoires can also be installed in bathrooms for the storage of towels, and other cleaning supplies, such as glass cleaners, clean rags, scrubbers, etc. If a bathroom is a place, where you shave, fix your hair, or use cosmetics – as many do – such an armoire is an ideal place to store your supplies for these applications, including your spare robe, and bathroom slippers.
  • In the guest rooms, these armoires are a great way to store items of personal use, including pillows, etc for your guests. You can place a basket on a shelf in the armoire for dirty clothes and linen, keeping these things out of sight, leaving your room neat and clean.
  • You can have them in your home office to hold your office equipments. In your baby’s room, it keeps the toys and other items belonging to your baby, out of harm’s way. If you do not have a pantry, one of these in the corner of your kitchen can store your supplies, such as various spices, herbs, baking materials, tea, coffee, and the like.

The uses for these armoires are endless. In the dining room, it is ideal for storage of china and tableware, napkins and tablecloths.  In the hallway, they can be used for stashing away umbrellas, coats, muddy shoes, mittens, backpacks, and sports equipment.

Types Of Corner Armoires

You can have your armoires in a variety of styles. The four major styles are Antique, Country, Mission, and Traditional.

You have a large variety of materials to choose from, when you go shopping for your armoires – Cherry, Walnut, Alder, Maple, Oak, Hickory – to name a few. There are different designs of armoires to suit the purpose you need them for.

It all depends on whether you need your armoires for your computer, along with its required accessories, or whether you need them for your various entertainment appliances, or purely as wardrobes in your bedrooms, and in your guest room. The use will dictate the number of shelves you need in your armoires, the number and style of drawers you would need, whether you want fixed or adjustable shelves, whether you need solid doors or glass doors, among others.

Many manufacturers of such armoires allow their customers to custom design their armoires. You have the freedom to select the styles, the designs, the materials, and also the color of the armoires you need. The popular colors are brown, black, and ivory.

Certain styles go well with a mixture of colors, such as red/gold, or black/silver, etc. You can opt for the base you want – a Pedestal foot, a Pegged foot, a Birdsall foot, or some other.

These armoires are great pieces of furniture to have, perched on Queen Anne style, or other style of legs, made of mahogany, or other material, carved, handcrafted, solid painted, with hand-painted motifs, hand-painted in chinoiserie style, or etched with brass inserts.

Corner armoires are items of furniture you cannot afford not to have.
