Uses Of Floor Lamps

Home

Floor lamps as reading lamps: Instead of sitting at your table and reading, you can take a book, sit in your favorite chair near a floor lamp and start reading.

Floor lamp as access lighting: Foyers and verandas can be effectively lit with help of floor lamps. The lighting provided by floor lamps will provide the lighting necessary without providing the glare. Soft lighting is the main requirement in foyers and verandas.

Floor lamps for roof lighting: Floor lamps with inverted guide provide a very different kind of lighting for your roof. Room will look very different during night.

Floor Lamp Construction

Floor lamps have a unique construction. Since the lamps have a height of over six feet, it is prone to toppling over easily. To avoid this, the base of floor lamps has to be bigger than 12 inches. The bigger the diameter of base, greater is the stability of lamp. The base connects to the lamp by a slender shaft. This shaft also accommodates a switch for starting and switching off the lamp. At the top of lamp, we have the illuminating bulb. The bulb may have attachments to direct light towards the desired object. There may be a lampshade. However not all the floors lamps have the shade. Having a shade or not having a shade is a matter of lamp design and maker will decide it depending on the purpose for which lamp is made.

Modern lamps have an inclination towards technology. The floor lamps may be designed to be switched on as a person enters room and then track his presence. As he moves along a corridor, the lamps would be switched on as he moves in the room.

Materials For Floor Lamps

Modern materials are being used for modern floor lamps. There is general inclination towards use of Stainless steel or electro statically painted steel, as they last longer without any major maintenance. The floor lamps should not require any major maintenance other than cleaning of lampshade, or occasional cleaning of base and the shaft. Other materials used for floor lamps are brass, bronze, chrome plated steel, copper etc. Available finishes would include, white, black, gold, silver etc. Major manufacturers include Maxim Lighting, Forte Lighting, House of Troy, George Kovacs, Lite Source, Kichler Lighting etc.

Costs

The costs of floor lamps vary very widely. From a low of $100, to a high $1500 is the range in which the floor lamps are available. Be ready to pay a higher price for designer lamps.
